Devon garden

A plantsman’s paradise, this garden is an abundance of summer colour and seasonal interest. Nestled in a valley in South Devon, just a stone’s throw from the sea, the brief for this garden was to help the settle the bold contemporary architecture of the house into its rural surroundings. A two-tiered terrace projects out up to the edge of a stream that forms the backbone of the garden. With multiple springs, this garden boasts a diverse range of water loving species of plants as well as large, billowing drifts of perennial planting. As the garden stretches out into wider 4 acre plot, the planting becomes increasingly naturalistic and the garden and landscape merge. The house faces the side of the valley where the native grass has been cut into enormous geometric shapes, that catch the morning light and are iridescent in the frost. Boulders sourced from Dartmoor are positioned in the planting surrounding that house to help anchor the building in the landscape.

With plans for an orchard, nut walk and garden room, work continues to develop on this 5 year project.
